The Andean cultural process unified its territory through the most extensive network of trails known to humankind — the Inca Trails.
Today, the Inca Trail is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of its most remarkable sections begins at Chachabamba and connects with Wiñayhuayna, the “Forever Young” archaeological site. The trail then continues through a beautiful stretch of cloud forest, leading to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where one of the most breathtaking views of Machu Picchu awaits.
Carved into the mountainside, the trail ascends from the valley floor past a spectacular waterfall. Just below the unique site of Wiñayhuayna, you’ll marvel at its remarkable construction, water temples, and residential areas. From there, the path continues along a mostly level stretch to Intipata, a stunning Inca site made up of sun terraces — accessible only to those who hike this route. The trail then hugs the eastern flank of Machu Picchu Mountain before arriving at the Sun Gate.
From the Sun Gate, you’ll behold the majestic Machu Picchu — a Llacta (Inca settlement), a Power Field, and a symbolic replica of the Axis Mundi once centered in Cusco. Strategically located between the highlands and the Amazon basin, this sacred site served as a trading hub. Caravans of llamas brought chuño, corn, and charqui from the Andes, exchanging them for feathers, coca leaves, medicinal plants, and hardwoods from the lower valleys.
Machu Picchu is part of a sacred geography, situated on a ridge connected to the revered Salkantay Mountain. It overlooks the sacred Willkamayu River, which originates from the glaciers, lakes, and lagoons of the high Andes. Flowing through fertile lands, the river nourishes Mother Earth and sustains life along its banks. According to local beliefs, once the river reaches the Amazonian lowlands, it returns to the Milky Way at night to “replenish its energy,” completing the eternal cycle of life.
Important: Each participant must bring a valid passport, a water bottle, and a daypack.
We begin the day by boarding the Vistadome train at Poroy Station. The journey travels across the scenic Anta Plateau, through the Pomatales Gorge, and alongside the Urubamba River. The steep canyon walls and shifting vegetation make for a beautiful ride. As we approach Kilometer 104, lush jungle vegetation blankets the mountains.
From the train stop, we begin a 4–5 hour hike along the final stretch of the Inca Trail. The first two hours involve a steady uphill climb to Wiñayhuayna. From there, the trail follows a gentle, mostly flat 5-kilometer section to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), located at 2,900 meters above sea level. We then descend to Machu Picchu, the legendary Inca citadel, where our expert guides will share the rich history and recent discoveries surrounding the site.
Built by the Inca emperor Pachacutec in the 15th century, Machu Picchu is nestled between two mountain peaks and offers sweeping views of the Urubamba River Valley and the distant snow-capped peaks. Its architecture is perfectly adapted to the natural contours of the mountain, with around 200 structures arranged in terraces around a large central plaza. The city is divided into an upper area (temples) and a lower area (residences and storage), with extensive agricultural terraces and advanced irrigation systems.
